CHARACTER DESIGN & CONCEPT WORK

A collection of some of my character designs and concept work.

The focus of this design was to create a character that was mostly armored, Ghibli-esque, and for a comedy adventure. I looked up references of armor in animated films to know the limits of how detailed I could make this character as armor requires enough information to be believable. I then focused on how I could proportion and shape the armor in contrast with the character's face to feel more light-hearted. â€‹

The focus of this project was to first create a design and then practice style matching and working within different industry standards. For animation I simplified the shapes and construction of the cheese wheel carrier; for video game I recreated the BOTW character art style and changed details of my character to fit into that world, adding Hylian patterns to his clothes and enlarging the cheese wheel; for graphic novel I focused on working in a looser style with uneven linear and color to allow for faster workflow.

A character I explored through research to figure out and inform my design and later loosely connected to my witch world. While I settled on a scribe, I originally played with ideas of a merchant and incorporated some early Chinese merchants apparel into my design. The owl head lends to its all-knowing status and its multiple limbs allow it to be perpetually writing while also making it clear that is an otherworldly being. It's uncanny, humorous playful mask is a nod to its fondness of humans but its ultimately removed role from them as a neutral spectator.

The focus of this was the creation of a creature based off of elements of real animals to make a more believable design. I used rhinos and whales, wanting to create a massive creature that traversed land and water and seemed impervious to lead into the story I made for them. I did animal studies and created characters for both a rhino and a whale before starting this project to help give me a sense of what I was working with and how I could characterize it.
