Dwelling People

In this series of designs, the intention was to make characters that looked like the houses they lived in. I started by gathering references for five different types: Cob, Peat, Yurt, Adobe, Tudor. After deconstructing them, I looked into their most associated cultures and time periods and did some initial sketches. I eventually decided on Tudor, Yurt, and Cob.

For the Tudor character, I wanted something that conveyed elegance. For fashion I was drawing from the 15th century and the 1920's because that is when Tudor was most popular. I found anachronism of the two particularly fun and leaned it to more heavily.

For the Yurt character, I was particularly drawn to how colorful the interiors were compared to the exteriors, as well as the way things were tied together on the outside. I wanted there to be a feeling of a big structure.

For the Cob, the big primitive but organic shapes were the main selling point to me. I looked at 13th century fashion, which was also generally simple unless you were incredibly wealthy. I went for a more peasant route, as I couldn't imagine someone with money living in a cob house within that period.
